Magazine prints provocative cover with HIV+ blood-infused ink

A magazine called Vangardist is seeking to draw attention to HIV and AIDS with a provocative cover that is printed with ink containing HIV-positive blood.
The special edition of the magazine features stories of "HIV heroes" at a time when the editors say too many people have grown complacent about the disease.
"There's been an 80 percent increase in HIV in the last 10 years -- that's according to the World Health Organization -- and that's pretty shocking," said Jason Romeyko, the Executive Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi Switzerland, who helped create the cover. "The reason why that's happening is people just aren't talking about it anymore."

HIV - infected men are more sensitive to alcohol

Men infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS need fewer drinks to feel the effects of alcohol than uninfected men, says a new study.
"All else equal, people who have HIV infection have a lower tolerance for alcohol than similar people without HIV infection," explained Amy Justice, professor of medicine and public health at Yale University. It is not clear, she added, whether HIV-infected individuals are simply more susceptible to alcohol or if they achieve higher concentrations of alcohol in the blood from the same number of drinks.

As HIV investigators work to control and eradicate the virus worldwide, certain myths or misconceptions about the disease have been embraced, whereas other concepts with merit have been left relatively unexplored, argues American HIV/AIDS researcher Jay Levy, MD, in a commentary publishing April 14 in the journal Trends in Molecular Medicine.
