Prevention
AIDS continues to be a complex and incurable disease of devastating impacts on individuals, communities and even nations. An estimated 33.2 million people worldwide are living with HIV in 2007. An estimated 2.5 million became newly infected with HIV and an estimated 2.1 million have died of AIDS. Despite advances in antiretroviral therapies, the only way to control the epidemic and reduce its impacts is to prevent new HIV infections. Universal access to treatment can only be achieved and sustained if the number of new HIV infections is significantly reduced through intensifying HIV prevention.
